First responder injury in storm aftermath prompts plea for safe driving

SHARJAH // An emergency worker was seriously injured when a motorist attempting to overtake an ambulance lost control and crashed into the side of the rescue vehicle.
The accident in Sharjah – which left a female emergency medical technician of the Northern Emirates National Ambulance crew with severe head injuries – served as a reminder for motorists to stop speeding and drive safely, especially in the aftermath of treacherous weather that caused hazardous driving conditions.
Robert Ball, National Ambulance chief executive, said that his crew member survived the crash and was flown to hospital.
She required an MRI scan and was sedated at the scene of the accident.
“I can confirm that a staff member from National Ambulance was severely injured in the performance of her duties on Thursday at 9am,” he said. “The staff member was injured when a car driven at speed collided with the ambulance and injured her.
“Fortunately, the police air wing from Sharjah was in the area at the time and airlifted her to Al Qassimi Hospital where she was treated by emergency staff.
“She is in a serious but stable condition.”
The accident happened near Bridge 10 in the Mahafi area. The ambulance was towed away after the incident, and the other crew member was not injured.
Mr Ball urged motorists to take more care on the roads.
“It is important that after a period of heavy weather people listen to the leadership of the country and the police who are requesting citizens and residents to drive carefully.”
He described overtaking an ambulance at speed as reckless at any time, but especially in the aftermath of a storm.
“The ambulance service is a precious resource for the community,” he said. “First responders are essential in ensuring we are able to support the community.”
